UPS5000-E Series

UPS5000-E Series (25 kVA to 800 kVA) Uninterruptible Power Supply

The UPS5000-E series is an ultra-high-efficiency modular Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) designed for medium and large-sized data centers. With the highest module efficiency (97.1 percent) in the industry, UPS5000-E is the best TCO power solution for data centers. Its reliable performance guarantees an enduring and stable power supply.

The system efficiency of the UPS5000-E can reach 96.5 opercent at 20 percent load, and 97 percent at 40 percent load, which is more suitable for the real service scenarios of the data center. The modular hot-swap design simplifies O&M, shortens maintenance or expansion time to five minutes, and expands the capacity of a single cabinet to 800 kVA. The system can flexibly expand, which greatly improves system availability.

Huawei’s modular UPS holds the largest market share in the world, and was awarded “Modular UPS Company of the Year” by Frost & Sullivan.

UPS Strengthens Airports’ Reliable Wings Provision

Introduction

Development of new-generation information technologies such as Big Data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are making it possible for airports to fundamentally change into more intelligent operations. With the prerequisite of guaranteeing information security, air traffic management, airline operation management, and airport operation management, airports, and their processes are evolving towards cloud-based services, integrated data, and innovative applications.

As a hub of modern traffic and transportation, airports undertake the important mission of providing convenient travel for people and their belongings. If an airport is not efficient, the consequence would be a lar
ge economic loss.

Background

Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport is located in Yubei District of Chongqing City, China, 19 kilometers away from downtown. The Airport is a grade-4E civil international airport making it a national large-scale airline hub and only eight airline hubs exist in China. In 2013, Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport became the fifth airport in China.

The airport has two terminals. Terminal 1 is for international flights while terminal 2 is for domestic airlines, totaling 200 thousand square meters. In 2015, Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport accommodated 32.4 million passengers.

Airport terminals are the central nervous system of modern airports and have a complex network system. Ensuring uninterruptible power supply for the data equipment in the airport terminals and the related key infrastructure is an important factor that airport administrators must consider. The Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) used by an airport is one of the most important security assurance devices of the whole aeronautical system and is vital to stable, reliable, and efficient administration of the airport. Selecting a reliable UPS was an important issue for designers and builders of the terminals of Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport.

Challenges

A primary concern for the constructors of the new terminals was the power supply system for the devices. Traditional power systems use distributed power supply, with one mini-UPS for each device. For example, security check passages, boarding gates, and baggage conveyors use 20 kVA to 80 kVA UPSs. These UPSs are scattered throughout the terminals making them inconvenient to repair and maintain.

If one of the smaller UPS systems are down, the airport needs to contact the vendor to repair the UPS and, if the time frame is uncertain, substantial trouble for the mechanical and power maintenance department of the airport as well as stranded passengers could result in lost reputation and lost revenue. Scattered and small-scale UPSs are not efficient and, coupled with the fact they have an efficiency lower than 90 percent, it becomes obvious that they are unsuitable for the current requirements for energy savings and carbon emission cuts.

Solution

After examining existing plans and from thorough discussion, the airport decided to use regional centralized power supplies for the new terminals and to replace the scattered small-capacity UPSs of the security check passages, boarding gates, and baggage conveyors with large-capacity centralized UPSs. To avoid the problem of voltage reduction, the distance of power supply to regional loads cannot exceed a certain value. Centralized UPS capacity is usually higher than 200 kVA. Centralized power supply greatly increases the efficiency and achieves energy savings while cutting carbon emissions. Centralized power supplies also solve the problem of scattered maintenance, though they have a high requirement for system reliability. Reliability can be improved by 2N architecture and a redundant dual-bus system. Single point of failure cannot exist because it may cause a system-wide outage.

The constructors of Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport carried out stringent bidding and examination and finally chose the Huawei UPS-5000E modular UPS solution to safeguard the new terminals.

Benefits

For the sake of reliability, Huawei UPS5000-E uses a state-of-the-art topological structure, fully modular design, and highly reliable N+X power distribution. The Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) is the shortest in the industry. Another feature of Huawei UPS5000-E, favored by Chongqing Airport Group, is the low-load with high-efficiency: 95 percent and 96 percent efficiencies at 20 percent and 40 percent loads, respectively. Compared with the 90 percent efficiency of a traditional UPS, Huawei UPS5000-E saves electricity fees.

High-density modular N+X system replaces the existing 1+1 towers, reducing the physical footprint by at least half. All functional components support hot-swap. An ordinary engineer can replace a faulty module in less than 5 minutes, quickly resolving failures.

As one of the world’s leading information and communications solution providers, Huawei took only several years to leap from entering the UPS market to becoming a modular UPS leader. Huawei UPSs are now in wide commercial use around the world, covering traffic, ISP, finance, government, and energy, while providing uninterruptible power supplies to key loads in large-scale and medium-scale data centers, security systems, and automatic production equipment, offering full-dimensional power assurance for the users.
